BSA Climbing Instructor Training

The objective of the course is to train adult leaders of Boy Scout troops and Venture Crews in the basics of climbing and belaying to the level of being qualified to take their youth on climbing outings and climbing gyms. Secondly, the adult leaders will have the goal of reaching a level that they can potentially  participate in a Climbing Director training course at Philmont Training Center or a National Camp School session.

Cost:

The registration cost will be $30, Lunch will be provided on Oct 8th, included with the course fee. Participants will need to bring their own food and pay their own way on the subsequent days and sites.

The course requires participation in all 3 full day sessions:

Session 1: Saturday October 8, at Youth Leadership Training Center - 1001 Davis St, San Leandro, CA 94577.

Session 2: Saturday October 15, at Castle Rock State Park

Session 3: Saturday October 22, 2016 at Pinnacles National Park

All sessions start at 8:00 AM and finish at 5:00PM. Carpooling is strongly recommended for Sessions 2 and 3.

Equipment is provided at Session 1 (helmet, harness, ropes, belay devices and other hardware). You may bring your personal gear, which will be inspected for condition and meeting standards. Topics covered include Climb On Safely, and how to teach the basics of belaying (using the Uniform Belay Standard), basics of climbing.

Students are encouraged to acquire their own personal gear (helmet, harness, and shoes) for sessions 2 and 3. Ropes will be provided, and some helmets and harnesses may be available from SFBAC. Note that hiking shoes may be used, to gain familiarity with the shoes most of your youth members will have. While climbing gear is expensive, owning your own personal gear will lead to a long-term commitment to your Unit's climbing program. Castle Rock has a Day Use fee (discount if you are a member of the California State Parks Foundation). Entrance to Pinnacles may be reduced, since we are still in the 100 year anniversary National Parks celebration.
