Powder Horn 2020

When: August 2-8, 2020

Where: Camp Royaneh and Wente Scout Reservation

Cost: $325 before Dec 31, 2019, $375 before April 30, 2020, $425 after

The Powder Horn course is designed to introduce and expose Venturing and Boy Scouting adult leaders and Venturing participants (14-20) and Scouts BSA high adventure youth (14-17) to the activities and resources necessary to operate a successful outdoor/high adventure unit-level program. It is based on the 8 core and 18 electives found in the Venturing Ranger program. It is intended to help adult leaders get out of the box in finding and using resources and in the way they lead their unit-level high adventure programs. The purpose of Powder Horn is introduce participants to requirements in a high adventure activity as well as to provide contacts with professionals that can assist in putting an event for your crew or troop. For completing the course, you will be awarded the Powder Horn pin which is worn on your uniform left pocket.

Purpose
The course is designed to help unit-level adult leaders and high adventure youth leaders to: 1. Find the resources necessary for a high adventure program. 2. Understand the safety and practical requirements for different high adventure disciplines.

Learning Objectives
1. Learn what resources are available to support a high adventure program.
2. Learn where to find the resources.
3. Learn how to use the resources.
4. Learn how to safely do a high adventure program.
5. Learn what is involved with different high adventure disciplines.

Requirements
1. Be a registered BSA adult; youth participant, must be registered in a Venturing or a Scouts BSA unit.;
2. Submit current BSA medical forms A, B & C
3. Take appropriate on-line training for activities including Youth Protection, Hazardous Weather, Climb On Safely, Safety Afloat and Safe Swim Defense, valid for the course.
4. Have your council Scout Executive approval

Powder Horn Activities
The course will feature a variety of high adventure hands-on activities including climbing, wilderness survival, geocaching, orienteering, archery, pistol, high power rifle, fly fishing, Discovery Scuba, equestrian, stand up paddling, kayaking, High and Low Cope and much more.

Powder Horn Venues
The first half of the week will be at Royaneh, located about 30 miles west of Santa Rosa and 10 miles from the coast.. Royaneh features a COPE course, a swimming pool, rock climbing, and horses. The second half of the week will be at Wente Scout Reservation located about 6 miles east of Willits, CA. Wente also has horses and rock climbing along with great mountain biking trails, two pump courses, an 80-acre warm water lake with a variety of boating activities and fishing.

Cancellation Policy
FOR ALL CAMPS AND EVENTS. Effective September 4, 2012. A great deal of advance planning and advance purchasing takes place for all programs and events of the San Francisco Bay Area Council during the months and weeks prior to an event, (facility rentals, supplies, staff hiring, food contracting, and program material acquisition.) Because of this the SFBAC has had to renew its refund policy.. 1. Refunds requested two weeks (14 days) prior to an event/camp may receive up to an 80% refund. One week prior (7 days) to your event/camp receive a 60% refund. Within seven (7) days of the event/camp there will be no refund. Any refund will be based on the following criteria:. 2. Types of refunds considered: serious illness or injury (a doctors certification required) or death in immediate family. Refunds are not given for no-shows, conflict of schedule (such as sports events, out of country trips), weather conditions, or behavior issues occurring before or during the event/camp. No requests accepted after September 1st.. 3. Refunds will be returned to the person(s) or entity from which the funds were received.. Refund requests should be sent to: San Francisco Bay Area Council, 1001 Davis Street, San Leandro CA 94577. Please include: participants name, unit, number, district, address, contact phone number, name of event and date or session of event.
