Mission Peak : Brownsea Session 2

  • Brownsea Session 2

Summer Camp is starting on Father’s Day 2009 (a week earlier than normal) and will cause the San Francisco Bay Area Council Brownsea Course to start on June 14. Fremont and Newark Unified School Districts’ last days of class are scheduled for the same week. To accommodate Mission Peak District Scouts, the Brownsea staff has undertaken to offer a separate 2nd session of Brownsea.

The dates of Brownsea - Session Two are Saturday morning, June 27 to Thursday night, July 2.

This option was not available in 2008 so Fremont Scouts missed this key Council leadership training opportunity. Preliminary published 2008-2009 council calendars did not conflict with the school districts calendars but the Camp calendar was moved up in late May.

Who may apply: First Class Scouts and above, age 13 and above as of October 1, 2009 may apply to Brownsea. This includes scouts who were eligible in 2008 as well as those that are eligible in 2009. The second session will be open only to Fremont and Newark Scouts. Others may only apply by permission of the Course Director. If there is enough staff for this session (see below), the number of Scouts that may attend from any unit will not be restricted.

Registration for Course: Registration will open up in January 2009 (www.Brownsea-NYLT.org). Please sign up for Session 2 no later than April 10th so the Brownsea staff can juggle resources.

How you can help: This second session is no small effort. Already, the Brownsea staff has invested in excess of 100 man-hours on the problem. There are numerous obstacles to overcome and we need help. The core Brownsea youth and adult staff have multiple years of experience; however, we do need additional adult support. Interested adults should e-mail their background to: Course-Director@Brownsea-NYLT.org.

We will need youth staff for an anticipated course of 40 to 70 Scouts. The final number will depend on our ability to recruit and train Troop Guides. There is 1 youth staff member per 6 participants by National Policy. Troops with Scouts who attended Brownsea in 2006, 2007 or 2008 are asked to find one or more older Scouts who have or will have earned a Brownsea strips by January, 2009, and ask them to apply for staff. If you have seen a change in your Scouts after Brownsea, be will assured that you that you will see an even bigger change after being on Brownsea staff.

Youth interested in serving on staff or know of scouts interested in serving on staff, please e-mail the Course Director at: Course-Director@Brownsea-NYLT.org, If you know of a scout is interested in a staff position, please e-mail where we can reach the interested youth(s). The detailed training schedule and dates of staff interviews will be distributed in November.

The Brownsea staff is committed to offering this second Mission Peak session. With your help, we can achieve this goal. Please contact us with any issues and look for updates on the Brownsea website: www.Brownsea-NYLT.org.

Please pass this information be passed on to your Troop, Committee, PLC, Scouts and their parents.
