The Rock
Climbing The Rock at the Youth Leadership Training Center is a great adventure for all Scouting participants and leadership. Our 32 foot natural looking rock with natural handholds that allow for over 500 handhold positions is an outstanding adventure for your unit. With 9 climbing stations and 2 rappelling stations your youth and adults are sure to have a great time. Focus of rock climbing program, including unit climbs, is safety training, with lots of fun thrown in.
Unit Climbs
Scouting units may make reservations for climbs on The Rock. Please give at least one alternate choice of dates. Climb approvals are based on availability of instructors. Weekday climbs are available to begin at 6:30 or 7:00 p.m. Saturday climbs may begin at 9 a.m., noon, or 3:00 p.m.
Cost for SFBAC units is only $125 for groups of 12. One or two additional climbers may be added at $10 each. The maximum climbers for any group is 12. Cost for out-of-council units is $140 for group of 10, $15 for each additional climber.
Guidelines for Use of Climbing Rock at Youth Leadership Training Center:
- RESERVATIONS SHOULD BE MADE AT LEAST ONE MONTH PRIOR TO REQUESTED CLIMB DATE. Please do not assume your climb is approved. If you do not receive a confirmation in the mail contact the Program Services Department for confirmation. Cancellation and reschedule fees will be charged.
- Clothing Guidelines and Parent Permission Slips will be sent with confirmation.
- All groups must follow the BSA leadership policy of two adults in attendance, one at least 21 years of age, 1 at least 18 years of age.
- Groups are requested to arrive 15 minutes prior to scheduled time.
- All groups must adhere to the Scout Oath and Law at all times. Unruly group members will be asked to depart premises.
- Parent Permission Slips must be brought by adult in charge at the time of the climb. Those without a permission slip will not be permitted to climb at that time. Even if parent is on site at time of climb a permission slip must be completed! (Permission slips will be sent with confirmation).

Rock Climbing Instructor’s Course
Rock Climbing and Rappelling Training
The SFBAC is offering an Indoor Climbing Instructor Course and an Indoor & Outdoor Climbing Instructor Course
National BSA Standards for individuals supervising climbing/rappel activities have stringent requirements. This program is structured to provided the highest quality training in not only climbing, but in risk/site management, rappel protocol, Leave No Trace and practical, safe anchoring techniques.
Two courses are offered:
- Indoor Rock Climbing Instructor Course: The first is to train instructors for indoor climbing / rappelling, specifically the Youth Leadership Training Center climbing wall.
- Indoor & Outdoor Climbing and Rappel Instructor Course: The second is to prepare instructors to become a SFBAC BSA climbing/rappel instructor. On completion of this last course, a candidate may apply for a certification exam.
Rock Climbing Instructor Course
INDOOR CLIMBING INSTRUCTOR COURSE

This one-day informative workshop is designed to train instructors in the BSA’s “Climb on Safely” and how to effectively supervise climbing / rappel activities at the SFBAC’s indoor climbing rock. Individuals who satisfactorily demonstrate the skills necessary to be an instructor after completing the workshop will receive an “Indoor Climbing Instructor” status.

Indoor & Outdoor Climbing and Rappel Instructor Course
Fee: $125
Dates: 2009 dates coming soon
Both indoor and outdoor sessions are required. Indoor sessions are at the Youth Leadership Training Center in San Leandro, and outdoor sessions are to be arranged.
This is the essential training course to complete in order to become a BSA Climbing / Rappel Instructor. Three eight hour sessions are spent on:
- Proper Gear Use
- Risk/Site Management
- Safety Instruction
- Leave No Trace
- Practical
- Safe Anchoring
- Climbing Technique
- Rappel Protocol
Individuals satisfactorily demonstrating their instructional, management and anchoring skills may enroll for the Climbing/Rappel Instructor Exam.
Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of climbing gear, documented experience climbing/rappelling for recreation, guiding as a professional, or as an Instructor in Training.
